Imagination is the beginning of creation. -- George Bernard Shaw

"One can't believe impossible things," said Alice. "I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." ---- Alice in Wonderland

"A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit." -- Richard Bach

Clear and cool, clear and cool, By laughing shallow, and dreaming pool. --- from Water-Babies

Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.--Anne Sexton

Here today, up and off somewhere else tomorrow! Travel, change, interest, excitement! -- Mr. Toad in The Wind in the Willows

"I write when I'm inspired, and see to it that I'm inspired at nine o'clock every morning. -- Peter DeVries

Teach us delight in simple things,
And fun that has no bitter springs,
Forgiveness free of evil done,
And love to all beneath the sun.

Resources to keep you afloat:

Gryphon Press's The Writer's Brainstorming Kit, $24.95 at http://gryphonbooksforwriters.com . It's incredible. A pack of cards you just may end up calling magic and a book to use with it. I've told some writer friends about this and the word on the egroup is "Kathleen was right!" I am.

The first hour I used it, I realized the Black Moment for my main character was not one thing I'd already had, but an entirely different and much more powerful Moment. In that same period of time practicing with the cards and book, I outlined a brand-new novel idea that's so refreshing and quirky it made me laugh out loud with joy.

Will it write the story? No. It gets you thinking in the river, though. Riverwriting is a natural follow up to this to see where your ideas go.

Won't all the stories be formulaic and cookie-cutter? Again no. In fact, the two authors deal out one set of cards and come up with two completely different stories: one Victorian romance and one adventure-thriller!

Book in a Week Concept - Multi-published writer April Kihlstrom swears by writing her first draft of a new novel in one week. She's persuasive-see her site on book-in-a-week tips at http://www.sff.net/people/april.kihlstrom/BIAW.htm
